Waldron Wassail

Where: Formerly Waldron, Sussex at the Star Inn
When: Formerly Saturday nearest 6th January (usually)
Time: Formerly 8pm

Local sides East Hoathly Morris and Winter Solstice Morris & Mummers organised a traditional wassailing event each January in Sussex. Wassailing is the winter custom of encouraging trees to produce a good crop in the forthcoming year (see article on Wassailing for more info) and is often held in January, in this case it was usually on the Saturday nearest to Twelfth Night (or occasionally the week following!). You could expect plenty of noise, dancing, mumming and cider.

Helpful Hints

In 2020 it was on Saturday 4th January and it was the 29th Wassail but hasn’t been held since- though there are sometimes plans to revive it, for the moment I conclude that the custom has lapsed .
