Whitchurch Blackberry Fair

Where: Whitchurch, Shropshire- all around the town centre
When: First Saturday in October
Time: All day from 11 am

Whitchurch in Shropshire is the setting for an annual fair named after the fruit of the season, the Blackberry, and has been a popular local event since it began in 2007. There are numerous performances by street artists, musicians, singers and dancers, and lots of stalls promoting local businesses, sustainability, crafts and food. Some of the costumes worn on the day are incredibly elaborate as you can see in the photos. We spotted steampunks, pirates, a giant, curious contraptions, shanty singers, live artwork, face painting, drummers, mummers and lots of morris dancers – and the Puff ‘n Pant Pedal Powered Stage which relies on the energy generated by cyclists on static bikes to keep the music going.

Helpful Hints

It’s always held on the first Saturday in October. In 2025 it should be on Saturday October 4th.

There are several settlements named Whitchurch around the country- this is the market town in Shropshire.

The street performances take place on an ad hoc basis all day- just hang around and wait and something will turn up. We had to hunt around with some dedication to find any food products made using the blackberry (which was surprising- we’d expected lots of jars of jam!) but our perseverance paid off when we found a stall selling Blackberry Crumble Cake which was absolutely delicious.
