The Forest of Arden covered large tracts of land in Warwickshire and gave its name to the archery club based at Meriden : the Woodmen of Arden. Club membership is exclusive and limited to 80 and the Woodmen wear a distinctive uniform and use traditional yew longbows. The Grand Wardmote is their annual gathering with competitions and meetings over four days from Wednesday to Saturday, ending on the first Saturday of August.
Helpful Hints
Though fairly frequently featured in books on customs this is essentially a private event for members only.
I went to spectate to discover that it was a private event and visitors are discouraged from attending
Hi Dom,
What a pity! Thanks for telling me about his, as it’s an event I haven’t been to so I have no direct experience of it. I’ll be making inquiries when the organisers’ website is working again (they must be currently having technical issues)as there is no point in encouraging the public to attend if they are not welcome. I’ve always read previously that while people are welcome to watch they don’t “court publicity” which is quoted from their own literature. When I hear back I’ll let you know what their response is!
Kind Regards,
Averil
Pouvez vous m’indiquer les modalités pour faire partie de votre club archery
Merci beaucoup
Sorry – I don’t belong to the club and have no contact details for them (they are very private!)
Averil
I think you will wait a long time, to the best of my knowledge they do not have a website. There is a good Wiki page about them and their history, but they are a PRIVATE Society and as such do not wish to have spectators.
