Where: | Stacksteads, Lancashire at the Rose n Bowl on Newchurch Road |
When: | August Bank Holiday Monday |
Time: | 12 noon |
The noble art of gravy-wrestling is a comparative newcomer to the sporting scene, beginning in 2007. Competitors must wrestle in a 16-foot pool of Lancashire Gravy for 2 minutes and are scored on technique as well as their ability to please the crowd. Rules are similar to regular wrestling, but with the added bonus of gravy! What’s not to like? At intervals the gravy pool is topped up with steaming fresh supplies from barrels prepared earlier in the day, and when some rounds are hard to call the judges ask the crowd for their opinion. Between rounds the competitors are hosed down by the local fire brigade, and the winner of each round goes forward into quarter and semi-finals with classes for men and women, before the all important final championships and the presentation of the silverware.
Helpful Hints
It’s a family-friendly event and anyone can enter for free – but don’t wear your best clothes or swallow too much gravy (it’s likely to be past its best!). Doors open at 12 noon with wrestling starting at 1pm, lasting until around 4.30. Food is available all afternoon.
In 2025 it should be on Monday 25th August.

Can Anybody come and get a pass to get close take photo’s
Hi Brian,
We aren’t connected with the organisation of the event here at calendarcustoms – I’d advise contacting the pub to check. It was fairly easy to get a good view any way when we went so best of luck!

Hi Brian, Ive been a photographer at this event multiple times in the past.
A few years ago it used to be a free for all and you could turn up on the day, pay £10 and you’ll be given a photographer pass. Unfortunately now, due to its popularity and small space, you will have to book many months in advance due to camera crews and other photographers.
If you ring the pub they should be able to book you in, if there in any availability.
