Pancake Races

Where: Countrywide
When: Shrove Tuesday or Saturday preceeding it
Time: Daytime

Many towns throughout the UK hold their own version of the Pancake Race (Olney is listed separately as it has its own unique tradition). My nearest venue was Hexham and the new event was held on the Saturday before Shrove Tuesday 2010 (also known as Egg Saturday) in the grounds of Hexham Abbey at 2pm;  there were races for adults and children but it isn’t held ever year. Wherever you are, expect chefs hats and lots of tossing! Another notable event is the Inter Livery Pancake Race organised by the Worshipful Company of Poulters  at Guildhall Yard in London at noon on Shrove Tuesday itself, with many competitors and visitors in fancy dress and/or full regalia.

Helpful Hints

Don’t try to eat the pancakes in the race – alternatives will be available nearby!

Shrove Tuesday is on 4th March in 2025 and the preceding Saturday is 1st March.
