Berwick Minden Day Parade

Minden Day is 1st August and it’s the anniversary of the Battle of Minden in 1759, in the Seven Years War against the French; the battle was a significant turning point in the conflict and a proud victory for the Kings Own Scottish Borderers. Today each year on the Saturday nearest that date (so frequently in late July) Berwick commemorates the anniversary with a military parade through the town, starting at the Barracks which was the base for the local regiment. Over time the various infantry divisions of the eighteenth century have merged and evolved but the observance of the date is still remembered as a glorious victory in the history of the KOSB. Legend has it that soldiers picked flowers on their way to the battlefield and put them in their headgear so they would be able to recognise each other in the heat of battle, and today the parading servicemen and women, together with regimental veterans, wear roses in their hats in memory of this. The roses are distributed at the Barracks just before the parade sets out. The procession marches along Walkergate to the Guildhall, where a salute is taken, to the accompaniment of pipes and drums, and it attracts a large crowd.

In 2026 it should be on Saturday 1st August. The parade is usually on the last Saturday in July unless 1st August falls upon a Saturday, and usually lasts around half-an-hour.
