Beverley Easter Tower Singing

Where: Beverley, Yorkshire at the Minster
When: Easter Sunday
Time: Service 8 am, Tower singing 9 am

On Easter Sunday following the morning service, the Minster choir at Beverley sing outside on the West Tower in an informal tradition that’s very well established, though not widely-known outside the town. The choir perform a selection of appropriate pieces such as “Jesus Christ is Risen Today” to the assembled crowd outside the gates, usually from the top of the tower. A number of places have similar tower-top traditions, usually on Ascension Day, but only a few take place on other days of the year like this one.

Helpful Hints

In 2027 Easter Sunday falls upon 28th March. Because Easter is a moveable feast linked to the lunar cycle, it varies in date from late March to late April. Though well established, the tradition takes place without separate advertisement on the Minster’s calendar, as it follows on after the early service.

When we visited, the choir sang at the foot of the Tower as peregrines were nesting on top!
