Augustine was a sixth century monk who was appointed by the Pope to lead the mission to Christianise Britain, and became the very first Archbishop of Canterbury in 597. Augustine converted King Aethelbert of Kent, whose Queen Bertha was already a Christian, and they gave land to the missionaries just outside the city walls of their principal settlement, Canterbury. Christianity spread through the land and Augustine soon became venerated as a saint; his feast day in 27th May (or 26th or 28th May depending on who you ask! )and his burial site is at St Augustine’s Abbey. The day is marked annually by a pIlgrimage procession from St Martin’s Church to the Cathedral, honouring the Saint, the King and Queen Bertha, and it’s organised by the Chaplaincy of Canterbury Christ Church University.
