St Andrew is the Patron Saint of Scotland, and each November a Torchlight Parade took place on the Saturday nearest his Feast Day on 30th November. Starting with entertainments at the Botanic Gardens, including bands, choirs, pipers and fire-jugglers, the enormous procession lit up before winding its way through the streets of the city’s West End to the University. Once there the torches were safely gathered up and more entertainments followed. Though a relatively recent addition to the Glasgow calendar, it was very popular and must be the biggest torchlit procession we’ve seen.
Helpful Hints
All ages were welcome, and it was pavements and roads for the route of the parade. Tickets for entry to the Botanic Gardens cost £13 in 2021 including a torch (£9 for those who don’t want a torch) but anyone could watch in the streets free of charge.
In 2021 it was on Saturday November 27th – future dates are yet to be confirmed and it appears the event has lapsed.
Don’t wear anything too good as you’re likely to get sparks and ash dropping from the torches, especially if there’s a breeze.
