Guildford Summerpole

Where: Guildford, Surrey starting High Street, then Castle Green
When: First Saturday in May
Time: From 10.30 until 4 pm approx.

The early May celebrations at Guildford are hosted by Pilgrim Morris and feature copious vigorous dancing, the erection of the mighty Summerpole, and a Jack-in-the-Green character known here as the May Bush. The day begins with a Procession, led by the Sword Bearer and Summer Court, from the High Street to the Castle Green, with stops for dancing en route from the hosts and several guest sides; the Summerpole is erected outside the Castle gardens with further dancing before a break for lunch. The afternoon begins with Soothsaying and dancing displays from all sides just outside the Castle Keep, where the Court and dignitaries view proceedings from a platform on high, before all return to the Summerpole for the finale and the taking down of the Pole. Beware of the resident Pilgrim Morris Zebra (a beast in the hooden horse tradition) who enjoys startling children and dogs and is said to have a nasty nip…
