Lincoln Mystery Plays

Where: Lincoln - usually at or near the Cathedral
When: July / August every 4 years
Time: 7.30 pm

The Mystery plays at Lincoln are a modern revival of the medieval tradition of  dramatic performances of Biblical stories, which were suppressed at the reformation. The name “mystery” comes from an old English term for trade or craft, as the original performances were put on by trade guilds, and has nothing whatever to do with crime drama! Following the successful revivals of similar events at York and Chester (see separate articles), Lincoln’s revival dates from the late 1970s. In modern times the full cycle of plays are usually performed every four years and the most recent locations have been the Cathedral cloisters and the Cathedral Gardens; during the fallow years the very talented and entertaining company put on other drama productions.
