The annual Redruth Mining and Pasty Festival is a two-day event held each September celebrating the industrial and culinary heritage of the ancient town. As well as all the components of a community event such as storytelling, music, dancing, crafts, concerts, talks, exhibitions and stalls, there are special aspects which feature the historical work and foodstuff of the area. The focus on the Friday is on Mining, as Redruth was a major centre for copper and tin extraction during the Industrial Revolution and beyond; one of the unique elements of the day is the Smoking the Stacks event when the chimneys of Wheal Uny are once again in use, this time with colours rising up from the chimneystacks. The colours used are red, white, blue and green representing the flag colours of towns with which Redruth is twinned in France, USA and Mexico. Saturday is for the pasties, and you can expect pasty-making and crimping competitions, as well as opportunities to make your own pasty and of course plenty of chances to eat one. The Cornish Pasty is the largest protected food name in the UK- only pasties made in Kernow can be so-called, and must comply with the correct D-shape, with a crimped edge and specified amounts of beef and vegetables inside. Also on offer on Saturday are free bus tours to Moseley Heritage Museum and Cornwall Gold at intervals throughout the day, and the festival concludes on the Sunday with a church service and walking tours.
Helpful Hints
In 2027 it should be on Friday 11th to Sunday 13th September with the main festival day on Saturday 12th.
The Smoking can be viewed close up, or if you want a longer view the monument at Carn Brea is a good vantage point.
