Sheffield Caking Night

Where: Sheffield, Yorkshire at the Rivelin Inn, Tofts Lane, Stanington
When: 1st November
Time: 7pm

Caking Night (or cakin neet) is a tradition held on the 1st November in the Sheffield area, distinct from Hallowe’en but bearing some significant common characteristics. In the past, children would roam around the residential parts of the district in costume, in search of sweets and cake and for cash to buy fireworks to make Guy Fawkes Night go with a bang later in the week (yes, very like trick or treat and Penny for the Guy combined) and adults would gather at the local pub dressed in bizarre fancy dress that totally disguised their identity, to keep everyone guessing as to who was beneath. The custom gradually dwindled away through the later twentieth century and died out in the early years of the twenty-first, replaced by the modern commercialisation of Hallowe’en, but was revived in 2025 by local historian Richard Bradley and will hopefully resume its place in the annual fixtures of the area.

Helpful Hints

It’s traditionally on the 1st of November regardless of the day of the week upon which it falls. Photos will hopefully follow shortly when I’ve been!
