Shrewsbury: Battle of Shrewsbury Medieval Weekend

Where: Shrewsbury, Shropshire at Battlefield 1403, to the north of the town at Upper Battlefield
When: Weekend in late July
Time: 10 am - 4.30 pm

The Battle of Shrewsbury took place on 21st July 1403, between the forces of King Henry IV and his rebellious subjects led by Henry “Hotspur” Percy, heir to the Earl of Northumberland. The Percy family had been disappointed when their earlier support for Henry didn’t result in the expected rewards that they had anticipated, but the day ended in disaster for them as Hotspur was killed on the field of battle. Today a living history weekend is held on the battle site near to the anniversary date, with talks, demonstrations, crafts and re-enactments, with the battle itself recreated towards the later part of the afternoon. The Battlefield church is also open on the day, which was built at the site of the burial mounds for the battle casualties.

Helpful Hints

In 2024 it should on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th July.

In 2019 the battle re-eneactment took place at 3pm which I think was earlier than stated by some sources, so I’d advise checking the schedule on the board on the festival field as you arrive. There’s a farm shop , deli and museum at Battlefield 1403, open all year.
