St David is the Patron Saint of Wales, and his feast day of March 1st is celebrated enthusiastically throughout the principality but naturally with especial zest at the little city named in his honour, St Davids in Pembrokeshire. The saint was born and died there in the sixth century and his shrine is in the Cathedral. There’s a pilgrimage walk to the holy well along the coast to St David’s and St Non’s wells, the cathedral bells will peal in celebration from 11.30 and the St David’s day stone at Oriel y Parc is illuminated at 12 noon (by light passing thought the capstone to illuminate the poem inscribed upon the rock) followed by the Blessing and then Prayers at the Shrine
Helpful Hints
The pilgrimage well walk begins at 9.30 at the Harbour, and joins the walk to the Cathedral in time for the rest of the festivities. The full schedule appears on the City Council link below.
Also around the date there is a parade (held on Saturday at 1.30 starting at Oriel Y Parc & moving along the High Street with dragons and dignitaries, live music and a motorcycle run.
Cawl is traditionally eaten on the day, and of course Welsh Cakes (which are available from the Refectory’s MamGu bakery right next to the Cathedral church- they also provide a mail order service).
