This is a traditional fair for Gypsies and travelling people to meet up and trade and it dates back literally hundreds of years, the Charter being granted in 1476. It began as a sheep fair, the Cotswolds being prime country for the wool trade, but has evolved into a horse fair something like the June event at Appleby (see separate listing) with lots of equines, horse-drawn caravans and sightseers keen to soak up the atmosphere and buy from the many stalls. Travellers will be there for a few days around the Fair date, usually beginning to arrive on the preceding Monday, and will return again in October for the second of the bi-annual fairs (the May fair is the bigger of the two).
Helpful Hints
The 2024 date was Thursday 16th May- 2025 date it yet to be confirmed but likely to be 15th.
Sometimes the fair date varies from the charter date by a week, so double check before travelling.
Parking will be available on King George’s Field. Be prepared for muddy conditions in the fields!!

Fair Day is the Thursday – there’ll be people staying there for a few days around it but I’ve only ever been on the Thursday itself so I’m not sure how quickly it ends or what happens at the weekend – sorry I can’t be more help!

I’ve only been to the fair as a visitor rather than a stall-holder, so sorry, I can’t answer that for sure, though I’d be very surprised if there isn’t a fee for ground rent. Maybe ask at the Stow information centre- they may have some contact details for the organisers?
